Vor jeder Analyse steht eine gezielte Probenentnahme und deren Dokumentation. Die gezielte Probennahme ist die wichtigste Vorraussetzung für eine erfolgreiche Voruntersuchung zur Maßnahmenplanung. Die Dokumentation erfasst die Metadaten zur Probenenahme und weist jeder Probe eindeutig einen Probenahmeort zu.

In der Regel sollte sie bei empfindlichen Objekten wie Wandmalereien durch Restauratoren oder zumindest zusammen mit einem Restaurator erfolgen. Wesentlich für den Erfolg der Untersuchungen und Analysen ist jedoch, dass die Person, die die Probe untersuchen soll, auch bei der Probenahme anwesend ist. Die Aussagekraft einer späteren Analyse hängt unmittelbar davon ab, wie repräsentativ die Probe am Objekt für die Fragestellung ist, denn man nimmt nicht die Probe, um eine Analyse zu bekommen, sondern um eine Antwort auf eine bestimmte Fragestellung zu erhalten. Each analysis should begin with sampling and its documentation. The quality of the sampling is paramount in determining whether the investigation will provide the required information to develop appropriate conservation measures.
